![]() If only we could add noise to a sound so audiophiles would think we were sophisticated. But as we know, some listeners enjoy the deleterious effects of analog media. After all, vinyl records and cassette tapes are subject to degradation which boosts noise and reduces so-called ‘signal’. ![]() Perhaps our initial impression of noise is that it’s unrelated to music. Now that we know which subset and types of noise we’re concerned with, let’s dive into three applications. ‘red noise’, the main ones we’ll deal with are white and pink mostly white. While there are other specific types of audio noise, like -6dB/oct. Technically, it is the sound of equal energy per octave and has an FFT slope of -3dB/oct. Some audio engineers use this to give mixes an initial referenced level balance. Pink noise, on the other hand, is slightly more relaxed, with less high frequency content. It is bright, soothing, and is technically equal energy per frequency which corresponds to an FFT slope of 0dB/oct. White noise, aka the sound of the Universe, is what analog televisions would produce when no video signal was present. Here, we’ll be specifically referring to what’s known as ‘white’ and ‘pink’ noise. Whether it’s referring to heavily-hoofed upstairs neighbors or an endless sea of pacifier-deprived artists, the term is broad much like the versatile American English ‘F-word’. When speaking of noise, we can mean many things. Noise – Easy Synth Programming 23 Noisy Neighbor
